On view December 7 - January 11, 2013
What up it’s ya boy Satan, and I’m proud to announce the inaugural show at Devil, Z1, featuring new paintings and drawings by Marisa Takal. I met Marisa in September at the New York Art Book Fair, through my partners at ROCK. After talking, we discussed having a show in December. Rather than presenting older work, we arranged a two month residency, where she would live in Baltimore and develop a new series of paintings.
The title Z1 can also be read as Z-One, Z-O-N-E, zone,
- a region or area set off as distinct from surrounding or adjoining parts
- one of the sections of an area or territory created for a particular purpose as a) an area on a field of play, b) a stretch of roadway or a space in which certain traffic regulations are in force
- a temporary state of heightened concentration experienced by a performing athlete that enables peak performance, “players in the zone.”
In this case zone refers to the paintings, in which Marisa has existed more so than in Baltimore during her brief stay. Motif functions as a structural element to the painting (establishing depth of field, resolving composition), rather than for symbolic value. Marisa’s iconography guides the viewer through the pastel haze of her paintings, while her naive hand eludes any connoisseurship. Painted torsos are cropped by the dimensions of the canvas, becoming the backdrop onto which teardrops, keys, locks and beckoning fingers enact a surreal drama.
Join us for an opening reception on Saturday, Dec. 7th, from 7-10PM. ROCK will release an accompanying zine featuring drawings and a poem by the artist.
Marisa Takal was born in 1991 in Montclair, New Jersey. She received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2013. Takal currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. http://mismaris126.tumblr.com/
